The Lagotto at work in the UK

The UK is one of the few countries where the Lagotto is still worked as a gundog, with its role in countries where truffles are in existence – including its native Italy – having turned to Truffle Hunting. More information on Truffle Hunting/Searching, including work in the UK, can be found in our Truffling section.

Lagotto Romagnolo classification for Kennel Club gundog activities in the UK

The Lagotto has been placed in the Spaniel Sub Group since 2014. For purposes of competition, i.e. Field Trials and Gundog Working Tests, Lagotto come under the ‘Any Variety Spaniel’ [except Cocker Spaniels and English Springer Spaniels] category (often referred to as ‘Minority Breed Spaniels’ for working tests and trials) which comprises Clumber Spaniels, Welsh Springer Spaniels, Field Spaniels, Sussex Spaniels, American Cocker Spaniels and Spanish Water Dogs in addition to the Lagotto Romagnolo. Some more information on working and training events for the breeds in this category can be found at www.workingminoritybreedsspanielclub.com. Our Member, Lyn Monk, who has trained and worked Lagotto for many years, serves as the Lagotto Romagnolo representative for the Working Minority Breed Spaniel Club.

We have LRCGB members involved in gundog work who have been flying the flag for our breed competing in Working Minority Breed Spaniel Tests and Assessments – news of these and placings can be found in the Gundog Tests and Assessments section. Other dogs are achieving in qualifications and placings in working criteria outside of Tests, for example the Working Gundog Certificate and BASC classes at Crufts – see Gundog Achievements for details. We run our own Training courses and have access to many other training sessions in the gundog calendar; we also frequently have a presence at Game Fairs around the country where our Lagotto can be seen in the minor breed areas and demonstrating in the gundog arena.

It is great to see more Lagotto involved in gundog activites, and we look forward to seeing these numbers increase in the future. If anyone has any queries about our gundog training or events, please contact Jude Bullen from our Working Sub-Committee, who will be able to point you in the right direction.
